Analyst Viewpoint:

As infrastructure ages and the cost of repair continues to weigh on asset owners, the construction industry is increasingly looking beyond conventional concrete toward materials engineered for longer service life and greater structural resilience. With bridge owners, building designers and public agencies looking to cut maintenance and lifecycle cost, new applications of ECC are emerging in bridge deck overlays and joint replacement, in seismic coupling beams for tall buildings, and in thin repair and lining layers for roads, walls and water channels. However, challenges remain in the higher upfront cost compared with conventional concrete, driven mainly by the cost of polyvinyl alcohol fiber, the limited number of design codes and specifications that cover ECC, and the lack of long-term field records outside a small number of demonstration projects. At the same time, the use of local sand, fly ash and slag in the mix, the move from laboratory mixes to ready-mix and sprayed delivery, and lower-cost fibers are improving the economics of the material. The market is being shaped by new needs such as accelerated bridge construction, resilient buildings in earthquake zones and lower-carbon repair materials, which call for ECC that is easy to place, self-consolidating and consistent from batch to batch. To realize the full techno-commercial potential of engineered cementitious composite, close collaboration between fiber and admixture suppliers, cement and concrete producers, structural designers, research institutes and public infrastructure owners will be essential.

Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) Market Overview:

Engineered cementitious composite, often called bendable concrete, is a fiber-reinforced cement-based material designed to bend and form many fine cracks instead of one large crack when it is stretched. It is made with cement, fine sand, supplementary materials such as fly ash and slag, chemical admixtures such as plasticizers, and short polymer fibers, typically at less than 2% by volume. It has no coarse aggregate. Tensile strain capacity is typically 3% to 7%, compared with about 0.01% for ordinary concrete, and crack widths usually stay below 100 micrometers, which slows the entry of water and salts that corrode steel. ECC is used as overlays, joints, repair layers and structural members.

By material, plasticizers lead with a 47.2% share in 2025, followed by fiber, cement and fly ash. Within fiber, PVA fiber leads with a 12.4% share. By application, high rise building leads with a 29.0% share, followed by bridge deck, roads and pavements. By region, North America leads with a 35.5% share, followed by Europe with 28.8%, Asia Pacific with 24.1%, Middle East & Africa with 6.8% and Latin America with 4.7%.

The main trend in this market is the move of ECC from research and demonstration projects to routine use in bridge repair, seismic buildings and thin lining layers, supported by self-consolidating, ready-mix and sprayed products and by interest in lower-carbon construction materials.
DriversThe Increasing Need for Durable Bridge Decks, Joints and Repair Layers
Seismic Resilience in Tall Buildings and Faster, Lower-Carbon Repair and Lining Materials

The Increasing Need for Durable Bridge Decks, Joints and Repair Layers

Bridge owners are looking for materials that cut the cost of repeated repair, and ECC is being used where cracking and corrosion shorten service life. In Michigan, an ECC link slab, developed by the University of Michigan with the Michigan Department of Transportation and completed in 2005, replaced a mechanical expansion joint on a bridge deck using about 30 cubic meters of ECC delivered in standard ready-mix trucks, and its performance was reported to have stayed constant in monitoring. In Japan, the Mihara Bridge in Hokkaido used nearly 800 cubic meters of ECC in its deck, with about 40% less material than expected, and a sprayed 20 mm ECC layer was applied over 600 square meters of the Mitaka Dam near Hiroshima.

Research on ECC for bridges continues in several regions. A University Transportation Center project led by Tennessee State University is testing ECC as a joint material for precast bridges built with accelerated bridge construction methods, aiming to resist wide cracking and corrosion. Researchers note that ECC costs about three times as much as conventional concrete upfront, but expect lower lifecycle cost from longer service life, since tight cracks protect the reinforcing steel.

Because aging bridges, roads and pavements exist in every major region, and owners are weighing lifecycle cost rather than first cost, these field records and trials are expected to support wider specification of ECC in overlays, joints and repair layers.

Seismic Resilience in Tall Buildings and Faster, Lower-Carbon Repair and Lining Materials

In earthquake-prone regions, ECC is used where buildings need to absorb damage without losing strength. Japan was the first market, with ECC coupling beams used in towers such as the 95 meter Glorio Roppongi building in Tokyo, which has 54 coupling beams, and the 41-story Nabeaure Yokohama Tower, which has four coupling beams per floor. ECC also weighs up to 40% less than conventional concrete and, in some uses, can reduce the need for rebar, which helps tall building design.

A second need comes from repair and lining work, where speed and carbon footprint matter. Concrete Canvas Ltd of the United Kingdom supplies a flexible concrete composite on a roll that is unrolled, wetted and set within 24 hours. The company claims installation up to ten times faster than traditional concrete and 60% lower carbon emissions, and its products are used to rehabilitate canals, where about a third of the water carried is estimated to be lost through the lining. In July 2026 its founders received the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Engineering Better Lives Award, and the company is building its first production plant outside the United Kingdom in Kyrgyzstan.

Together, seismic design needs and the push for faster, lower-carbon repair are widening the range of structures that specify ECC and related cementitious composites, and they favor suppliers with ready-to-use and sprayed products.

Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) Regional Market Outlook:

North America is the largest market, with a 35.5% share. Demand is supported by research and field work on ECC link slabs, deck overlays and accelerated bridge construction joints, led by Michigan and other state transportation programs, and by an aging bridge and pavement network.

Europe holds a 28.8% share. Demand is supported by infrastructure repair and by the use of cementitious composite mats and repair layers, with Concrete Canvas Ltd based in the United Kingdom and Sika Group based in Switzerland. ECC has also been used at larger scale in Switzerland.

Asia Pacific holds a 24.1% share. Japan is the original market for ECC, with seismic coupling beams in tall buildings, the Mihara Bridge and the Mitaka Dam repair, and China National Building Material Co Ltd. is among the large regional building material suppliers.

Middle East & Africa holds a 6.8% share and Latin America holds a 4.7% share. Demand in Middle East & Africa is supported by canal and channel lining needs in water-scarce areas and by building projects, while in Latin America it depends on bridge and road repair and on suppliers such as CEMEX, which is headquartered in Mexico.

Key Companies in Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) Market:

The market includes building material and construction chemical producers, specialist composite suppliers and regional concrete product makers. China National Building Material Co Ltd. is a large building materials producer in China, Sika Group is a Swiss supplier of construction chemicals including concrete admixtures, and CEMEX is a global cement and concrete producer headquartered in Mexico. Concrete Canvas Ltd, based in the United Kingdom, supplies flexible cementitious composite mats and is expanding production to Kyrgyzstan.
