Analyst Viewpoint:

The future of power grids depends not just on how electricity flows, but on how accurately and intelligently it is measured. As utilities accelerate the transition toward digital substations and smarter grid operations, digital instrument transformers are emerging as a critical enabler of safer, more reliable, and data-driven power infrastructure. With utilities, railways and industrial users looking for safer, lighter and more accurate measurement, new applications of digital current and voltage sensing are emerging in transmission and distribution substations, traction power systems, renewable energy connections and large industrial plants. Digital current transformers lead the market, and designs based on optical, Rogowski and low-power sensors are replacing parts of the conventional oil-filled and gas-insulated equipment, because they send measurements as digital data over a process bus. However, challenges remain in long-term accuracy and reliability in the field, cybersecurity of the data links, interoperability between suppliers’ merging units and protection relays, and the retraining of utility engineers who are used to analog wiring. Cost is also a factor, since many utilities continue to use conventional transformers with stand-alone merging units as a lower-risk first step. At the same time, restrictions on SF6 gas in switchgear and the need to add more data to the grid are strengthening the case for sensor-based designs. The market is being shaped by new needs such as digital substations, direct current systems for railways and renewable links, and condition monitoring, which call for instrument transformers with higher accuracy, lower maintenance and open communication standards. To realize the full techno-commercial potential of digital instrument transformers, close collaboration between instrument transformer makers, protection and automation suppliers, utilities and standards bodies will be essential.

Digital Instrument Transformers Market Overview:

Digital instrument transformers measure current and voltage in power systems and send the result as a digital signal instead of an analog signal. They use sensors such as optical, Rogowski coil and low-power designs, or conventional transformers combined with merging units. A merging unit converts the measurement into sampled values that protection, control and metering devices read over an IEC 61850 process bus, under standards such as IEC 61850-9-2 and IEC 61869-9. They are used in power transmission and distribution substations, railways and metros, industrial plants and commercial buildings.

By product type, digital current transformers lead with a 59.9% share in 2025, followed by digital voltage transformers and digital combined instrument transformers. By current type, alternating current leads with a 66.4% share, and direct current holds 33.6%. By voltage range, 69 kV to 800 kV leads with a 75.7% share, followed by 36 kV to 69 kV. By current range, above 1000 A leads with a 43.7% share. By end-use, power & distribution industry leads with a 42.4% share, followed by railways & metros and industrial. By region, North America leads with a 36.1% share, followed by Europe with 35.7% and Asia Pacific with 17.9%. Middle East & Africa holds 7.2% and Latin America holds 3.2%.

The main trend in this market is the move from conventional instrument transformers with analog wiring to digital designs that connect directly to the process bus. This is supported by large grid investment programs and by rules that restrict SF6 gas in switchgear.
DriversExpansion of Renewable Power Generation Capacity
Increase in Use of Digital Instrument Transformers in Railways & Metros

Expansion of Renewable Power Generation Capacity

New renewable plants and the grid connections that serve them are creating demand for accurate, fast and compact measurement. IRENA reported that a record 692 GW of renewable capacity was added worldwide in 2025, including 511 GW of solar, taking total renewable capacity to 5.14 TW, about 49% of global installed power capacity. Asia accounted for 74.2% of the additions, while the Middle East grew its renewable capacity by 28.9% and Africa by 15.9% compared with the previous year. Grid spending is following as global grid capital spending surpassed $US 470 billion in 2025, with the United States at about USD 115 billion and China and the EU and UK at about 20% each, and transmission investment growing at a 16% compound annual rate from 2024 to 2027. In India, there would be an estimated INR 4.91 lakh crore of spending between 2027 and 2032 on transmission lines and substations rated at 220 kV and above.

Renewable power plants and the converter stations and substations that connect them produce fast-changing currents and, in many cases, direct current components. Optical current sensors are well suited to this. ABB describes its fiber optic current sensor as inherently free of magnetic saturation, accurate over a wide temperature range, able to measure fast transient and short-circuit currents and AC with a DC offset, and free of oil and gas. Arteche has positioned its optical current transformers for HVDC links, which connect offshore renewable generation. In Europe, restrictions on SF6 in new switchgear under the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573, starting with medium voltage equipment up to 24 kV from 1 January 2026, add to the interest in sensor-based designs that do not rely on insulating gas.

Since renewable additions, grid spending and equipment replacement are all taking place across the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, demand for digital current and voltage measurement is likely to rise steadily at new generation connection points and transmission substations.

Increase in Use of Digital Instrument Transformers in Railways & Metros

Rail and metro operators in several regions are building and electrifying lines, and each new traction substation needs protection and metering. In China, operating railway mileage reached about 165,000 km at the end of 2025, including 50,400 km of high-speed rail, and 3,109 km of new lines opened during the year, including 2,862 km of high-speed rail. Railway fixed asset investment in 2025 was 901.5 billion yuan. In India, 69,427 of 70,001 route km of the broad gauge network, or 99.2%, were electrified by November 2025. In Europe, just over half of the rail network is electrified, the EU invests about EUR 40 billion a year in rail, and the TEN-T core network is due for completion by 2030, with an estimated cost of EUR 515 billion.

Digital measurement is a good match for traction power systems. Research by the University of L’Aquila and Ferrovie dello Stato on 3 kV DC traction lines in Italy notes that normal operating currents can approach the magnitude of currents from distant faults, which makes it hard to tell a fault from a temporary high load. Sensors that are free of magnetic saturation and report digital data over IEC 61850 allow protection relays to see these currents more accurately, and studies on railway and urban transit power supply have examined IEC 61850 digital substations for traction substations. Digital substations also reduce copper wiring in compact station buildings.

As rail and metro networks expand in Asia, Europe and other regions, and as operators renew older traction substations, use of digital instrument transformers in these systems is expected to grow.

Digital Instrument Transformers Regional Market Outlook:

North America is the largest market, with a 36.1% share. Demand is supported by the largest grid investment program in the world, at about USD 115 billion in 2025, and by new capacity from suppliers such as RITZ in Georgia and Arteche in Mexico.
Europe holds a 35.7% share. Demand is supported by grid spending by the EU and UK, the EU F-gas Regulation that restricts SF6 in new switchgear, and a strong base of suppliers such as ABB, Siemens, Arteche, RITZ and Schneider Electric.

Asia Pacific holds a 17.9% share. Demand is supported by Asia’s record renewable capacity additions, China’s grid and railway investment, India’s planned transmission build-out and first digital substations, new capacity such as Arteche’s plant in Dalian, and suppliers such as Sieyuan Electric, BHEL, Takaoka Toko, Nissin Electric and Mitsubishi Electric.

Middle East & Africa holds a 7.2% share and Latin America holds a 3.2% share. Both regions are smaller markets, with growth linked to grid expansion and industrial demand.
