Analyst Viewpoint:

The malonic acid market is witnessing a consistent growth rate with continued demand for building blocks used in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavors and fragrances, and specialty polymers and coatings. With manufacturers looking for safer processes and lower-carbon raw materials, new applications of malonic acid and its esters are emerging in isocyanate-free, low-VOC coatings, biodegradable polymers and natural preservation systems. Today, nearly all supply is made from petroleum-based raw materials, through routes that use chloroacetic acid and cyanide or through hydrolysis of malonate esters, while bio-based malonic acid made by fermenting plant sugars is only at the start of commercial scale. However, challenges remain in matching the cost and purity of the established chemical routes, handling a product that is sensitive to heat, and securing steady and traceable sugar feedstocks at plant scale. At the same time, programs to secure domestic supply of pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates in India and Europe are changing where demand is located and how buyers choose suppliers. The market is being shaped by new needs such as cyanide-free production, renewable carbon content and biodegradable end products, which call for materials with consistent quality, lower emissions and a verified origin. To realize the full techno-commercial potential of malonic acid, close collaboration between fermentation developers, chemical producers, coating and polymer formulators and pharmaceutical manufacturers will be essential.

Malonic Acid Market Overview:

Malonic acid is a dicarboxylic acid and a versatile chemical building block. It is used to make barbituric acid and other pharmaceutical ingredients, flavor and fragrance compounds such as gamma-nonalactone and cinnamic acid, and specialty polyesters, alkyd resins and crosslinkers for coatings. It is also used as an acidity regulator and natural preservative additive, and to crosslink starch into biodegradable thermoplastics. Most malonic acid is made from petroleum-based raw materials, either through chloroacetic acid and sodium cyanide or by hydrolysis of dimethyl or diethyl malonate. Bio-based malonic acid is made by fermenting sugars with engineered microbes, using feedstocks such as corn stover, sugar cane molasses and beet molasses.

By type, petroleum-based malonic acid leads with a 99.8% share in 2025, and bio-based malonic acid holds 0.2%. By feedstock, crude oil leads the market, followed by beet molasses and sugar cane molasses. By application, active pharmaceutical ingredient leads with a 27.8% share, followed by flavors & fragrances, natural preservative additive, chemical intermediate, pesticides production and biodegradable thermoplastic. By end-use, food & beverages leads with a 27.8% share, followed by paints & coatings and cosmetic. By region, Asia Pacific leads with a 40.7% share, followed by Europe with 24.0% and North America with 23.4%. Middle East & Africa holds 8.4% and Latin America holds 3.6%.

The main trend in this market is the start of bio-based production alongside the established petroleum-based supply. This is supported by programs to secure domestic pharmaceutical supply chains and by coating and polymer makers looking for lower-emission, renewable-content materials.

Government Programs to Secure Domestic Pharmaceutical Ingredient and Intermediate Supply

Malonic acid and its esters are building blocks for pharmaceutical ingredients, including barbituric acid and valproate, as well as for agrochemicals and for flavor and fragrance compounds. Governments are now supporting local production of these chemicals. In India, the production-linked incentive scheme for bulk drugs has an outlay of INR 69.40 billion and runs through FY 2029-30. A round opened in May 2025 covered 11 categories of key starting materials, drug intermediates and active ingredients. By August 2025, 32 firms had been selected for greenfield projects and 48 projects covered 33 ingredients, intermediates and key starting materials. A sixth round opened on 26 November 2025 for meropenem and ritonavir.

In Europe, the EU Critical Medicines Act reached political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council on 12 May 2026. It confirms criteria for strategic projects that build or expand EU manufacturing capacity for critical medicines and their active substances, and allows public buyers to favor suppliers in proportion to the share of the medicine and its active ingredients made in the EU. The text still needs final endorsement, with publication expected toward the end of 2026.

Since these programs are being applied in more than one region at the same time, they are likely to broaden the base of local producers and buyers of intermediates such as malonic acid and diethyl malonate. This supports steady demand from pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fragrance manufacturers.

Commercial Scale-Up of Bio-based Malonic Acid and Malonates for Low-VOC Coatings and Biodegradable Polymers

Bio-based production is moving from pilot work to commercial plans. In September 2024, Lygos and CJ BIO signed a memorandum of understanding for a biorefinery at CJ BIO’s site in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to make Ecoteria bio-based malonates and Soltellus biodegradable polymers. The initial capacity is up to 40,000 metric tons per year, with potential to expand to 100,000 metric tons per year, and construction is expected to take 18 to 24 months after groundbreaking. Lygos uses an engineered yeast, Pichia kudriavzevii, to ferment sugars into malonic acid, which avoids the cyanide used in the chloroacetic acid route.

Demand for renewable-content malonates is coming from coatings. Real Michael Addition coating technology, marketed by Allnex as ACURE, is isocyanate-free and cures at or below room temperature, with topcoats that can be formulated below 250 g/L VOC. Malonate-functional polyesters made from diethyl malonate, isosorbide and vegetable oils have reached up to 53% renewable content in research, with higher levels projected as more bio-based polyols are added. Malonic acid is also used to crosslink starch into biodegradable thermoplastics and as a precursor to specialty polyesters.

This progress is still early, as bio-based malonic acid is a very small part of today’s supply. It nevertheless gives coating and polymer makers a route to renewable-content materials without changing their formulations.

Malonic Acid Regional Market Outlook:

Asia Pacific is the largest market, with a 40.7% share. Demand is supported by large pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fragrance manufacturing, India’s production-linked incentive scheme for bulk drugs and intermediates, and a large base of Chinese chemical producers.

Europe holds a 24.0% share. Demand is supported by the EU Critical Medicines Act, a strong pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industry, and suppliers such as Lonza and Merck KGaA.

North America holds a 23.4% share. Demand is supported by the planned Lygos and CJ BIO biorefinery in Iowa, research funding for bio-based chemicals, and demand from pharmaceutical, coatings and food users.

Middle East & Africa holds an 8.4% share and Latin America holds a 3.6% share. Both regions are smaller markets that depend on demand from pharmaceutical, agricultural and coatings users.

Key Companies in Malonic Acid Market:

The market includes bio-based developers, specialty and fine chemical producers, and chemical suppliers in China, Japan, Europe and the United States. Lygos (United States) is developing bio-based malonic acid and malonates through fermentation and has partnered with CJ BIO (South Korea) on a planned biorefinery in Iowa. Lonza (Switzerland) and Merck KGaA (Germany) are established suppliers of fine and specialty chemicals.
