Analyst Viewpoint:

The bio-based flavors and fragrances market is growing at a steady rate as food, personal care and health product makers move away from synthetic ingredients toward ingredients taken from plants, algae and other renewable sources. With consumers asking for clean labels and with regulators in several regions pushing companies to replace synthetic dyes and additives, new uses of natural extracts are emerging in dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, cosmetics, animal nutrition and agriculture. Colour and flavour ingredients such as spirulina, curcumin and beta carotene lead in value, while extracts with antioxidant and preservative roles, such as rosemary, are gaining attention as brands look for natural ways to keep products fresh. However, challenges remain in matching the colour stability, taste and cost of synthetic ingredients, especially in acidic drinks and in products exposed to heat and light. Dependence on agricultural harvests, with changes in crop yield and quality, also affects supply and price. At the same time, cleaner extraction is shaping the market, with supercritical CO2 and other solvent-free methods gaining interest alongside established solvent extraction, and with fermentation-based sources such as microalgae offering steadier supply. The market is also being shaped by new needs such as bio-stimulants, plant-based personal care and natural preservation, which call for ingredients with better stability, traceable origin and consistent quality. To realize the full techno-commercial potential of bio-based flavors and fragrances, close collaboration between growers, extraction specialists, ingredient suppliers and brand owners will be essential.

Bio-based Flavors and Fragrances Market Overview:

Bio-based flavors and fragrances are ingredients that give taste, aroma, colour or functional benefits to products and are made from renewable biological sources instead of synthetic chemicals. This report covers naturally sourced ingredients such as curcumin from turmeric, beta carotene, paprika and rosemary extracts, spirulina, anthocyanin, and plant-based oils and fats. They are made by extraction methods such as solvent extraction, steam distillation, supercritical CO2 extraction and pressing. They are used in dietary supplements, personal care and cosmetic products, bio-active medicines, spices, food preservation and coloring, animal feed and agriculture.

By product type, spirulina leads with a 29.6% share in 2025 followed by Omega-6,9 FCE, curcumin and beta carotene. By extraction method, solvent extraction leads with a 46.0% share, followed by supercritical fluid extraction using CO2 and steam distillation. By application, dietary supplements lead with a 45.5% share, followed by bio-active medicines personal care and cosmetic product. By end-use, food and beverage leads with a 66.6% share, followed by personal care and pharmaceutical. By region, Europe leads with a 42.1% share, followed by North America with 22.7% and Asia Pacific with 21.5%. Middle East & Africa holds 8.1% and Latin America holds 5.6%.

The main trend in this market is the replacement of synthetic dyes and additives with natural ingredients, together with growing use of cleaner extraction methods. This is supported by changing rules on synthetic colours and by brand owners reformulating products to meet clean-label demand.

Replacement of Synthetic Dyes and Additives with Natural Ingredients Across Geographies

Labeling rules in the main regions reward ingredients that can be shown to be natural. In the European Union, Regulation (EC) 1334/2008 requires that for a flavoring to be called natural, the substance occurs in nature, the raw material is natural and the process is natural. In the United States, 21 CFR 101.22 applies a two-part test of natural raw material and natural process. Natural vanillin shows how this works in practice: vanillin made by bioconversion of ferulic acid from rice can carry a natural label in both regions, while vanillin from other sources may qualify in only one region or not at all. Solvay, now Syensqo, doubled its Rhovanil Natural CW capacity to 120 metric tons in December 2019 to meet demand for natural vanilla flavors. Buyers also need authentication, using isotope methods and supplier audits, to confirm that a vanillin is genuinely natural.

Fragrance rules are also changing. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 expands the list of fragrance allergens that must be named on cosmetic labels from 26 to more than 80. The rules apply to new cosmetic products placed on the EU market from 31 July 2026, and to all products from 31 July 2028. Essential oils and other natural extracts must be declared when they contain these allergens, so suppliers need batch-specific allergen data for each natural material. This increases the value of well-characterized and consistent ingredients, whether extracted, fermented or made by a combination of methods.

Since food, personal care and cosmetic makers face these requirements at the same time, demand is rising for natural flavor and fragrance ingredients with documented origin, process and composition.

Investment in Natural Ingredient Capacity and New Sources

Leading companies are committing capital to new plants near their growing customer bases. In North America, Givaudan began construction in October 2025 of a liquids production facility in Reading, Ohio, with an initial investment of CHF 187 million (USD 215 million), 24,000 square metres of building space and partial operations planned from 2027. In Asia, Givaudan broke ground in September 2025 on a CHF 40 million fragrance and beauty facility in Guangzhou, China, combining a creative centre with a highly automated production site, and opened a CHF 50 million flavor powder plant in Cikarang, Indonesia in July 2026. dsm-firmenich is investing about EUR 70 million in India, including a EUR 55 million greenfield taste plant in Gujarat, due to start in the fourth quarter of 2027 with 15,000 metric tons of annual capacity for sweet and savory flavors, and an expansion of its Kerala seasoning plant that added 15,000 metric tons of capacity from October 2025.

Investment is also going into natural ingredient supply and research. In February 2026, Givaudan announced CHF 55 million to build Campus 52 in Grasse, France, a production facility and innovation laboratory for natural ingredients focused on extraction technologies and responsible sourcing, linked to its House of Naturals organization. In January 2026, Mane of France was reported to have acquired ChemoSensoryx Biosciences of Belgium, a company that screens how human smell, taste and trigeminal receptors respond to ingredients, which supports work on odor control, taste modulation and sensation-based ingredient design. Givaudan also states that its Ambrofix fragrance ingredient is made by fermenting sugarcane, which shows capital moving into fermentation-based routes as well as plant extraction. The sustainability claims for this ingredient are company statements and have not been independently verified.

This spending is spread across Europe, North America and Asia. Local plants shorten supply routes to customers, and investment in extraction, fermentation and sensory science widens the range of natural and bio-based ingredients that can be supplied at consistent quality.

Bio-based Flavors and Fragrances Regional Market Outlook:

Europe is the largest market, with a 42.1% share. Demand is supported by the EU natural flavoring rules, the expanded cosmetic fragrance allergen labeling that applies from 31 July 2026, a strong base of flavor and fragrance houses such as Givaudan, dsm-firmenich, Symrise, Mane and Syensqo, and investment such as Givaudan’s Campus 52 natural ingredients center in France.

North America holds a 22.7% share. Demand is supported by the 21 CFR 101.22 definition of natural flavors, large food, beverage and personal care markets, new capacity such as Givaudan’s liquids production facility in Ohio, and the presence of leading suppliers such as IFF and Sensient Technologies. Asia Pacific holds a 21.5% share. Demand is supported by growing food, beverage and personal care consumption, new plants by Givaudan in China and Indonesia and by dsm-firmenich in India, and established suppliers such as Takasago International in Japan.

Middle East & Africa holds an 8.1% share and Latin America holds a 5.6% share. Both regions are smaller markets, with growth linked to food and beverage and personal care demand.
