Analyst Viewpoint:

The bio-based epoxy resin market is growing at a steady rate as industries look to cut the fossil content and carbon footprint of their materials. With stricter chemical rules, rising sustainability targets and buyer demand for lower-emission products, new uses of bio-based epoxy are emerging in coatings, adhesives, composites, wind blades, construction materials and automotive parts. Resins based on soybean and other vegetable oils lead in volume because the raw materials are easy to source, but their limited heat resistance is pushing innovation toward lignin, cardanol, furan and sugar-based building blocks that can replace bisphenol A. However, challenges remain in matching the strength and heat performance of fossil-based epoxy, securing steady and traceable supplies of by-product raw materials, and bringing costs closer to conventional resins. Long customer qualification periods, especially in wind energy, automotive and construction, also slow the move from lab results to approved use. At the same time, demand for measured bio-based content and clear carbon data is driving work on testing standards and labeling. The market is being shaped by new needs such as bisphenol-free formulations, recyclable composites and low-carbon coatings, which call for resins with better performance, lower emissions and a verified renewable origin. To realize the full techno-commercial potential of bio-based epoxy resins, close collaboration between raw material suppliers, resin producers, formulators and end users will be essential.

Bio-based Epoxy Resin Market Overview:

Bio-based epoxy resins are epoxy resins made fully or partly from renewable raw materials instead of fossil raw materials. Common raw materials include vegetable oils such as soybean oil, lignin from wood and plant waste, cardanol from cashew nutshell liquid, and furan compounds made from plant sugars. Some resins also use epichlorohydrin made from glycerol, which is a by-product of biodiesel. These resins are used in paints and coatings, adhesives, composites and laminates, and are sold to the construction, automotive, wind energy and consumer goods industries.

By type, soybean oil-based resins lead with a 25.7% share in 2025, followed by vegetable oil-based resins, lignin-based resins, cardanol-based resins and furan-based resins. By application, paints & coatings lead with a 46.9% share, followed by composites, laminates and adhesives. By end-use, building & construction leads with a 34.6% share, followed by automotive & transportation with 23.0%. By region, Europe leads with a 32.9% share, followed by Asia Pacific with 29.8% and North America with 28.8%. Middle East & Africa holds 4.4% and Latin America holds 4.1%.

The main trend in this market is the move from partly bio-based resins toward bisphenol-free resins with higher bio-based content. This is supported by tighter chemical rules and by buyers asking for verified low-carbon materials in all major regions.
DriversTighter Regulations on Bisphenols and Growing Demand for Verified Low-Carbon Materials
Progress in Renewable Raw Materials and Resin Development across Europe, U.S. and Asia Pacific

Tighter Regulations on Bisphenols and Growing Demand for Verified Low-Carbon Materials

The first driver is regulation and buyer requirements, which apply in all major regions. In Europe, Epoxy Europe, the industry association, follows a proposed restriction on bisphenol A and the ban on bisphenol A in food contact materials. Both increase interest in alternatives. EU-funded research addresses this directly. The Horizon 2020 Ecoxy project, supported by the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking, developed bio-based resins to replace DGEBA, using precursors from lignin and algae and epoxidized vegetable oils.

In North America, bio-based content is often documented through the USDA BioPreferred labeling program, which US producers have used to measure renewable ingredients in epoxy formulations. In Asia, the focus is on raw material supply and new chemistry, as described under the second driver. In all regions, buyers are asking for measured bio-based content. The EU’s EmpCo Directive, which applies from 27 September 2026, sets stricter requirements for environmental claims.

Since chemical rules, customer sustainability targets and labeling requirements all apply at the same time, this driver supports steady demand for bio-based resins in paints & coatings, construction and automotive uses in every region.

Progress in Renewable Raw Materials and Resin Development across Europe, U.S. and Asia Pacific

The second driver is progress in both raw materials and resins. In Europe, Michelin Engineered Polymers (ResiCare) published data in 2026 for Resi4 EPOXY, a bisphenol-free epoxy made from sugar-based monomers. It shows a glass transition temperature above 142 degrees C with an anhydride hardener, compared with 127 degrees C for DGEBA, and is aimed at composites, structural adhesives and UV-curable coatings. The company plans industrial demonstrators of the monomers in 2027. Sicomin’s GreenPoxy range, launched in 2020, offers up to 51% certified bio-based carbon content for automotive, marine, wind energy and sports use.

In the United States, Gougeon Brothers, the maker of WEST SYSTEM and PRO-SET epoxies, acquired Entropy Resins of California in 2018. This added bio-based epoxy formulations for adhesives, coatings and composites. In Asia, a 2026 patent landscape found that China accounted for about 30 of more than 50 bio-based epoxy filing records reviewed. Korean companies are also active, including a 2025 isosorbide-based epoxy filing by Kukdo Chemical and related resin filings by LG Chem in February 2026. In Thailand, Solvay’s Epicerol plant makes epichlorohydrin from renewable glycerol, which shows that bio-based supply for the epoxy backbone already exists at commercial scale.

This progress is spread across regions and raw materials. It supports lignin-based, cardanol-based and furan-based resins as they move from research toward products, while vegetable oil-based resins remain the largest group.

Bio-based Epoxy Resin Regional Market Outlook:

Europe is the largest market, with a 32.9% share. Demand is supported by chemical regulation on bisphenols, EU-funded research programs and an established base of bio-based resin suppliers in France, Germany and other countries.

Asia Pacific holds a 29.8% share. Demand is supported by large construction and manufacturing sectors, active research and patent filing in China, Korea and Japan, and commercial renewable epichlorohydrin supply in Thailand.

North America holds a 28.8% share. Demand is supported by the USDA BioPreferred labeling system, an established bio-based epoxy supply base, and demand from construction, marine and composites users.

Middle East & Africa holds a 4.4% share and Latin America holds a 4.1% share. Both regions have smaller markets linked to construction and industrial coatings demand
